Microaggressions
Women of color regularly experience microaggressions in the workplace in general. Microaggressions are subtle, continual, and commonplace snubs, insults, or acts of discrimination that stigmatize women of color or culturally marginalized groups and remind them of their subordinate status in society and their âothernessâ (Sue et al. 2007). Microaggressions can also lead to and exacerbate imposter syndrome (McGee et al. 2021).
The cumulative stress associated with microaggressions results in a wide range of negative outcomes for women of color. These include a lower quality of life, lower emotional well-being, increased depression, and worse physical and mental health (Douds and Hout 2020; Williams 2020; Williams et al. 2020). Furthermore, uncertainty around what constitutes a microaggression (Midgette and Mulvey 2021) can increase self-doubt in interpreting interactions with others.
